In this paper, we have developed and estimated, by utilizing micro-level data collected in the 16th round of the nation-wide Family Planning Survey conducted by the Mainichi Newspapers in 1981, a model of childbearing, abortion experiences, and abortion attitudes in contemporary Japan. This effort represents one of the first attempts to build a multiple equation, micro-level model of fertility and fertility-related bahavior and attitudes in Japan. The results are almost wholly consistent with received demographic theory and research. Japan has now reached the last stage of her demographic transition and the results herein are consistent with the view that social and economic differentials in fertility are gradually eroded over the course of the transition. There are still statistically significant residues of these differentials in contemporary Japan, but they are, at best, modest in scope. Fertility in modern Japan is largely a matter of age and personal desires. Even abortion, which was so instrumental in moving Japan through the first stage of her demographic transition in the immediate postwar period, exhibits only weak relationships with the social and economic position of women; attitudes about abortion are even more weakly linked to the social order. In sum, as of 1981, the process of family formation appeared to have evolved to the point where it was largely homogeneous with respect to social and economic status. The differentials which remain are the expected ones, but their magnitude is not overwhelming and the force of social location is at most only a modest constraint on fertilility behavior and fertility-related beliefs and attitudes. This is the exact scenario one expects to find in a nation which has completed its demographic transition.
