Recently fuel cell cogeneration systems are expected to become increasingly popular for residential use, from the standpoint of environmental issues and energy consumption. Fuel cell systems can be clarified by their electrolytes. For residential use, the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) system is one of the most promising systems due to these advantages; the high power density, the short start-up time, and the high efficiency. Petroleum fuels are very popular in Japan because of the low cost, the high area coverage, and the easy storage. PEFC cogeneration systems powered by petroleum fuels are also expected as back-up power supply system during disaster. NOC has developed and commercialized a 1-kW class liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) powered and kerosene powered PEFC cogeneration systems for residential use in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
