The High-Temperature Air Combustion Technology (HiCOT) project was executed as a NEDO project for five years from 1999 through 2004. The objectives of this project were to realize a high level of energy conservation as well as lower emission of air pollutants, the target levels being expressed as concrete numerical values. The three types of furnaces chosen for research and development were pulverized coal boilers, incinerators and steam reformers. Using regenerative burners, highly preheated, low oxygen-con-centration air was introduced into furnaces. The project finished successfully and all goals were attained. The outline of the final results for three furnaces was demonstrated.
