Coal, specially, thermal coal has an advantage over other fossil fuels, oil and natural gas, in that the geographically-evenly-distributed and cost-competitive resources are rich enough to sustain more than 200 years supply. Thermal coal supply will be increased with the demand increase. But, coking coal, due to the less even distribution and more required conditions for generation, is different from thermal coal in terms of resources situation. Today, Australian coking coal is dominant by the 60% share in the world market. This is one of reasons for the current tight supply-demand situation. Prospected future demand for coking coal to increase world pig iron production should be supported or complemented by development of new coking coal resources and new technological development to utilize lower grade coal.
