This paper is our first attempt at a statistical classification of oral narratives. Obayashi compiled a database of the myths of agricultural origin among minority nationalities in South China. The database indicates presence or absence of 18 motifs in 74 versions. Hayashi made a cluster analysis of the material, and Obayashi interpreted the results. The dendrogram of motifs discloses 6 major clusters and that of versions reveals 12 major ones. In this manner some myth types, obtained by a non-statistical method by Obayashi, bore a statistical verification. They include types such as grain-stealing, grain brought by a bird, and flying giant rice grain. In the next paper we shall try a factor analysis of the same data.
