Tea is a major ago-based labor intensive industry in Bangladesh and occupies an important role in the national economy of Bangladesh. It occupies 2% of world production and 1% of the world export. At present there are 160 tea estates in Bangladesh. Among all the estates, 27 tea estates are managed by Sterling Companies who produce 50.5% of the total production of the country from 39% of the tea area. Where as the rest of 133 tea estates are managed by the Bangladeshi entrepreneurs occupy 49.5% of the total production from 61% of the tea area. Yield per hectare of Bangladeshi tea estates is only 900Kg. where as, the Sterling Companies yield is 1,436 Kg. The age of the plant, non-utilization of granted area, lack of cost consciousness and inefficient management of the gardens are putting pressure on production level. Besides, labor productivity of tea plantation greatly depends on the working efficiency of labor. This productivity can be improved by the motivation of the labors. Objective of this paper is to find out the impact of production related cost factors on production level of Bangladesh tea industry. In addition to that, this paper focuses on the impact of these factors on strategy formation process from national viewpoint. After an in depth analysis is the found that both Sterling and Bangladeshi local companies should follow the expansion strategy especially strategic alliance, bush management strategy and labor management program which can improve the production level and quality of produced tea. This will in turn help Bangladesh tea industry to secure a strong position in the world market.
