This paper is intended to survey the childrens understanding pattern of the classification of animals and to apply "understanding pattern method" to the criterion-referenced test. Our results in this study are as follows; 1. Most children in the 7-8th grade achieve (understand) the classication of animals more than 60%. 2. Only 30% of the 7-8th grade children achieve (understand) "the concept of animal". And it is the most difficult for the 5-6th grade children to achieve (understand) this concept. 3. The 7-8th grade get more continuous score pattern than 5-6th grade. Furthermore, it may be suggested as follows. 1) The understanding of the classification of animels are relatively depend on the secondary school teaching of the biological classificaton. 2) This biological teaching in elementary and secondary school is not enough to teach "the concept of animal" to the children. 3) "The understanding pattern method" gets useful application to the criterion-referenced test.
