Nowadays music has possessed an apparent variety and complexity, as you know, and it has become increasingly difficult to approach to the nature of its beauty. Very often our eyes dwell with delight upon its appearence, and so it is quite impossible to find out its valuable and essential matter. This thesis has an aim as an approach to such a problem. In the thesis at first, I intended to pick up, as an outset, that dynamic phase in the development of European music, that is, to investigate aesthetically a series of the streams shifting from classic through Beethoven to Romanticism. And I should like to consider the connections between "music" and "thoughts, words, ideas and affairs" flowing constantly in the stream. Now that music, which started from the age when it once centered about the organized beauty of sound material, has been deepened even into the perfect human contemplation, we cannot bestow any consideration on it without thinking of its relations with "word" in a large sence. In that case, for example, necessarily comes up following question-What is meant by absolute music? Although the interpretation on the historical metamorphosis of music by the present author depends chiefly on that of Paul Bekker, it is the aim of this thesis to approach to "beauty of Sound" as an actual existence, amplifying and developing it.
