This thesis aims at making inquiries into basic ideas of the music-education theory built up by James L. Mursell, Professor of Teachers College, Columbia University. Below are given the titles of the two works which have been most helpful in the preparation of this thesis:- 1. Education for Music Growth By J. L. Mursell (Ginn, 1948) 2. Music Education: Principles and Programs By J. L. Mursell (Silver, 1956) The concept that Mursell lays emphasis on in music education is musical growth. His opinion is that music education is to hasten and foster musical growth, which, moreover, is not based on technique but on musical responsiveness. With regard to the aim of music education, he declares that it cannot be thought of and set up without any consideration of human nature, human living, and human growth, and that it should not be education for music's sake but education in and through music. By way of suggestion Mursell given his five new aims, probing into each of them to explain the reason why he has to suggest them, which are as follows:- 1. Enjoyment 2. Success 3. Discipline 4. Social Development 5. Widening Cultural Horizons
