This report is one of the products from the research journey to Shinshu that we tried in November, 1962. The education in Shinshu, we believe, is a typical one preserving and developing the better tradition of the Japanese education. Shinshu or Shinano is another favorite name of the Nagano Prefecture. It is situated about the central part of the Japanese Main Island, and famed for the Japanese Alps, the Suwa Lake, etc. Its people also are noted for their industriousness, virtuousness and high evaluation of education. (I) The education there has many characteristics among which the most fundamental will perhaps be the teacher's pride of his profession and people's reverence for the teacher. The teacher is believed being no salary man, but a contributor or bearer of history. His mission or duty comes first, salary follows. This order shall never be conversed. The self-consciousness of this historical mission is that which we call the professional spirit. (II) Where and how is such a spirit succeeded and encouraged? The first and most important is the school. The work of the teacher is considerably severe. Every evening, when the pupil has gone home, teachers begin their seminary or conference at about 5 o'oclock. It takes two hours at least, so they remain late at school. The main leader is, of course, its principal. His most important duty or role is to assist teachers in encouraging the professional spirit and ability. Moreover he can choose his staff as he likes, and this fact proves his high credit given by the board of education. The human relation between principal and teacher is generally good and they respect each other. (III) Next will he Shinano Education Association be mentioned. It is one of the oldest ones, founded at 1886. Conquering several crises, it has continued to grow steadily under eminent leaders among whom Hajime Asaoka, Torataro Sato and Kishichi Moriya are especially memorable. Almost all the achievements or merits of the Shinshu's education in past have had direct or indirect connection to this association, therefore it is called it's symbol. Now, the monthly " Shinano Kyoiku" (meaning the education in Shinshu) has been published by it, numbering No. 920 at July, 1963. It is a local magazine, but as for the content broadly evaluated as one of the first rank ones in this field. Famous poets or scholars as Akahiko Shimagi, Minoru Nishio and Bunmei Tsuchiya were once its chief-editors. (IV) Lastly, we give a glance to some main characteristics of the Shinshu's people and its cultural heritage during the Edo Age and after the Meiji. It shall be remembered that its excellent status now and then has a wide and profound basis as such.
