This research utilizes data from the utterances of Japanese language learners, focusing on the usage of "sentences lacking genuine modality". The following results were obtained: (1) "Sentences lacking genuine modality" are used in learners of the advanced level and higher (2) The "Sentences lacking genuine modality" used by learners are used in the following situations: 1) when providing multiple concrete examples, 2) when providing multiple concrete examples of events along a timeline, 3) when paraphrasing. (3) When multiple things (such as examples in support of one's opinion, events along a timeline, etc.) have been previously listed up in the speaker's mind, "sentences lacking genuine modality" are utilized to present these to the listener in an easy to comprehend manner. (4) After multiple things have been presented, cases of these being grouped under the phrase "sou iu" are common. Previous studies have also shown the phrase "sou iu" to be particularly common in superior level learners. (5) "Sentences lacking genuine modality" serve to make learners' utterances richer and more expressive. From the above results, we can conclude that, in the instruction of advanced and superior level learners (who are expected to possess discourse level linguistic competency), it is important to teach not only morphemic level structures like conjunctions and referentials, but also discourse expression skills based on different sentence types such as "sentences lacking genuine modality".
