The purpose of this article is to scrutinize the entrepreneurial activitiesof a cotton cloth weaver, Yoemon Sasaki Shoten, in the Bingoregion of Hiroshima Prefecture (an eastern part of the prefecture)during and after the First World War, and to analyze the behavior ofits workers.Sasaki Shoten, which was not only a manufacturer but also a merchant, procured much of its cotton yarn from quite a few merchants atthe local area and in the city of Osaka. A part of the yarn thus acquiredwas sent to two weaving sheds of its own, while the rest was sold tosmall weavers in its neighborhood. Around the depression of 1920, somelocal merchants in the region, including Sasaki Shoten, speculativelyengaged in the future trading of cotton yarn. The workers of the Sasaki Weaving Factory were mainly female, most of whom had grown up near the shed and completed primaryeducation at best. In the agricultural society, where opportunities foremployment in modern business enterprises were scarce, the SasakiWeaving Factory was an important working place for the local people. There was relatively high worker mobility between Sasaki's twoweaving sheds.
