• The level of participation in brass band act-ivities in Japan is highest in the world, and the number of brass band groups affiliated with the All Japan Band Association has expanded to 13,795. However, many brass band groups have concerns, including the decreasing number of members as a result of declining number of children, the lack of leaders and financial problems. Furthermore, regarding student' participation in brass band activities after graduation, the number of groups, such as community brass bands, is only 1,768, comprising less than 20% of the total. Our school, in which both the Kurume Children's Brass Band and the Kurume Shin-ai Girl's School Brass Band Club are currently active, is also concerned with above-mentioned issues. Therefore, in order to further expand and continue the activities of these bands, the Kurume Shin-ai Girl's School Community Brass Band was founded in 2005 with these 2 groups as the core. Members of this band consist of former members of the group (club), school faculty members, and family members who were associated as community members. Members are required to have been involved with the brass band for approximately 10 months. The activities of this band act to address the above-mentioned concerns, such as the declining number of members and the lack of leaders. The present study describes the future prospects of brass band activities in lifelong education through an examination of the above-mentioned case.
