Toynbee says in the opening sentence of A Study of History, "In any age of any society the study of history, like other social activities, is governed by the dominant tendencies of the time and the place". Then, by what tendency is his theory governed? Its origin is found in Spengier's Der Untergang des Abendlandes. Toynbee borrowed several important ideas from Spengier's theory of history and developped them in his way. But there is one essential difference between their theories. The difference consists in the estimation of the relation between civilization and religion. In Spengier's system, religion does not play so important role, while Toynbee considers religion as the purpose of history itself and civilization, nothing but the moment of religion. This treatise shows this view of history, Toynbee's metaphysical challenge to our age.
