As compared with her great sisters, Anne Bronte has accepted an excessively underestimated position in English literature. She constructed her own creative world and its influence still remains effective in our time. Her world is based on, among other things, sound common sense. But her common sense definitely challenges the unreasonable conventions (which others regard as common sense) on which the Victorian male world is built. She is a talented story-teller, as George Moore points out, and her narrative world, which contains entertainment and instruction, shows us heroines' predicaments in their occupations or in matrimony, their efforts towards emancipation from their tyrannical employers and husbands and their mental independence and means of self-support in society. In this essay we shall see through her two heroines' lives what 'gentle' Anne's common sense is and why it can be challenging to the contemporary world.
