Some Semantic Aspects of Complementizers

The purpose of this paper is to explore the semantic interrelationship of the three complementizers: that, to, and ing. I will not commit myself theoretically on the matter of the transformational vs lexicalist hypothesis. However, tentatively inclined for the latter, I will show, (i) that complementizers are not semantically empty, (ii) that some semantic factors or 'aspects', such as Factivity, Emotivity, Definiteness, Stativity, and Authority, are taking part in the complementizer choice, (iii) that to and that make a good contrast in terms of these semantic aspects: the former is roughly 'subjective' while the latter is 'objective', and (iv) that ing, unlike that and to, is indifferent to these aspects. Some possible examples and counter-examples are mentioned and examined.
