The structure of Richard II has a most sophisticated analogicai relationship with the rites of human sacrifice conducted in primitive tribal societies, as John Holloway has persuasively demonstrated there is an analogy between the pattern of Shakespeare's tragedies and rites of sacrifice. The main structural scheme of time in this play can be defined as the "interregnum" after the death of the warrior-king, Edward III, with his grandson Richard as a mock-king. The life of Richard must be offered to the gods or ancestral spirits of the community after he has sumptuously enjoyed the royal prerogatives in a topsy-turvy condition. To document this theory an anthropological approach has been followed in this paper along with the usual analytical method of studying the structure of drama.
