In this short essay the human relationships between the four chief characters of Edward the Second are traced, especially concerning their love and hatred. Marlowe's characterization and psychological description in this play excel those in any other of his works. He cleverly reveals what the King's affection for his favourite Gaveston is like, how the neglected Queen is driven into infidelity, and how Mortimer comes to harbour so audacious an ambition. Though some may be of different opinion, the writer of this essay is disposed to attach greater importance to jealousy than to homosexuality as the main factor in this play. He also tries to give a rough sketch of the charaters' profiles as he sees them himself through Marlowe's description of their love, hatred, jealousy and ambition.
