Combination of Character-level, Unit-level and Stroke-level Matching for On-line Chinese Character Recognition(Character and document processing)

In this paper, we present combination of character-level, unit-level, and stroke-level matching to improve the confidence of on-line Chinese character recognition. There are cases in that the recognition confidence is more crucial than the absolute recognition accuracy. A good case is handwriting recognition application on Chinese character qualification examination. Our system has 2,362 character categories that cover all of the first level (top level) Chinese character writing test. Our research target aims at how to achieve the smallest recognition error rate. We built three recognizers using different matching methods, then combined the recognizers to get the recognition result with maximum confidence. In order to discriminate easily confusable characters, we added result verification method using structural information. We got 97.17% recognition accuracy with 1.23% error rate and 1.60% rejection rate using regular style Chinese handwriting.
