On the synthesis of hexamethylenetetramine from methylenechioride and ammonia, an optimum condition was found between 80-90% concentration of ammonia. The relative rates of liquid ammonia and 80% aqueous ammonia to 34% aqueous ammonia were 0.4-0.5 and 12-18 respectively. The reaction occured in aqueous ammonia might take place as an S_N2 reaction, but the reaction mechanism in liquid ammonia was indefinite. It was also found that the reaction rate increased in the presence of a little amount of Fe ion and decreased with the increase of some ion a little more same ion.
