In numerical analysis of the fracture mechanics parameter, a finite element method (FEM) and its related technique to calculate the fracture parameter are applied to a practical problem. A virtual crack closure method (VCCM) is an efficient method for the calculation of an energy release rate at a crack tip, and it is applied to calculate the energy release rate of two- and three-dimensional problems. If VCCM is used, the energy-release rate can be obtained easily from the nodal displacements and the equivalent nodal forces at the crack tip neighborhood. However, it has been considered that the computational accuracy relatively depend on the finite element meshes. Therefore, the parametric studies with regard to the finite element meshes are performed and the results are discussed.
