This paper attempts to account for telephone openings in Japan in terms of the negative-politeness culture of the country. Research was conducted to identify features of Japanese telephone openings, and these are discussed in terms Japanese politeness culture, and compared and contrasted with telephone openings in various other countries. It is proposed that Schegloff s (1968) first rule accounting for sequence structure in North American telephone openings, the distribution rule for first utterances, can also be applied to Japanese telephone openings if the innovation is allowed that picking up the telephone in itself constitutes a turn in the speech event of a telephone opening.
