Section one takes an overview of royal policies towards Jews in Medieval England from 1066 to 1290 to reveal how the Kings' protection of them made a vital contribution in forming the English people's notion of them as a royal resource. English rulers gave Jews privileges in order to impose heavy taxes on them, which invited ordinary people's envy and resentment and physical attacks upon them. Section two analyses the mechanism of anti-Semitism from these three angles: royal policies towards Jews, the treatments of them by the Church and the people's reactions to them. These three elements were linked to one another and led to anti-Jewish riots. Section three focuses on the final decision by Edward I to expel Jews from England in 1290. The seriousness of anti-Jewish violence and the illegal Jewish coinage and coin-clipping were crucial to his decision.
