One of the most salient characters of American Puritanism was its great devotion to God and resulting sturdiness. However, it soon gave rise to a spirit of toleration and became increasingly divided into two evolutionary branches: philanthropic revivalism and liberal intellectualism. The former represented the persistent belief in the idea of inherent human depravity and also in the salvation by faith in the authority of Scripture, esp. as it is presented in the four Gospels, and the latter drew upon individual human reason and morality, thus revolving around the dichotomous splitting of evangelical revivalism and rational (or, oftentimes, non-rational but not irrational) intellectualism.
