The free market policy in Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations could be interpreted as a centrist policy that seems to object to two of the dominant eighteenth-century political ideologies competing with each other, Court Whiggism and Country Whiggism. There was an aspect of the Wealth of Nations in which Smith tried to show that free market could benefit both the landed interest in the country, supported by Country Whigs, and the monied interest in the city, represented by Court Whigs. In Smith's view, free trade would expand the market for agricultural products to the city as well as that for manufacturing and foreign goods to the country respectively.
