Social support is one of the factors which influence the course and outcome of bereavement but sometimes it can be unhelpful and it is associated with increased depression. It is necessary to make clear the state of support for the bereaved adolescent in Japan. The purpose of this article is to find the constructs of the perception of support which have influenced the bereaved adolescent after the death of a loved one. The article reports the responses to three open-ended questions. Six adolescents were interviewed to describe support attempts from others that were helpful and unhelpful, and their needs to cope with the death. Text data were analyzed using text mining techniques. Support attempts mentioned as helpful and unhelpful were grouped into twelve clusters and eleven groups. Lastly, their needs were grouped into six clusters: 'ventilation in a familiar environment,' 'daily support from family and friends,' 'feeling understood by others,' 'having access to a support center for the bereaved,' 'being naturally treated,' and 'feeling resistance to counseling.' These indicate that adolescents want grief care from specialists and a natural attitude in society toward the expression of grief.
