• This is a study about the indirect use value of traditional gardens. The typical traditional gardens of Suzhou are located in the street blocks of Suzhou, the historic city. The street block of Suzhou is characterized by its historical composition and as well as the function as a residential district. The study aims to appraise the macroscopic value of the gardens by clearing up its rank in the historical composition and in the function as a public area. In the conclusion, the macroscopic value of Suzhou typical traditional gardens exists in two aspects: its place as a necessary element of the city's historical composition firstly, and secondly in the function of being public area in the residential district. Thus, it is necessary to take the conservation of Suzhou classical gardens into account when the planning system of the ancient block of Suzhou is made.
