In this paper we examine the nature of the non-restrictive relative clauses whose characteristic role is described as addition of the extra information. The content of a restrictive relative clause is presented as an indispensable part of the meaning of the clause containing it, whereas that of a non-restrictive relative clause is presented as an isolated unit of information. After reviewing where this construction often occurs, we will see how it is actually used in conversational discourse, why this extra information is added and what relevance it has to the ongoing interaction.
