• For the purpose of solution to the problems of improvement of forest management in Kagoshima Prefecture, this research analyses the actual states of private forest management in 2 towns-Kawanabe and Chiran, Kawanabe County. The private forests surveyed are owned by the farmers and each forest area is very small. The farmers maintain their forests incidentally to their agricultural activities and the management of these forests are generally poor. To improve these forest management, there are need of more attention to farm forestry as a part of agricultural programs and the public assistance to promote better farm forestry practice.
