Abstract The experimental sudy here investigates the fatigue crack growth behavior in polycarbonate (PC) using three types of specimens, bending-in-plane, three-point-bending and cantilever-beam in air and several liquid environments. The growth rate has been well expressed by the law suggeseted by Paris in spite of the difference in fatigue methods. Thermal history has affects the growth rate. Quenching has caused softening of PC and, as a result, it has significantly reduced the growth rate of fatigue crack. Specimen thickness has also affected the growth rate due to change of the stress state from plane stress to plane strain. The liquid environments increase the growth rate. In bending-in-plane specimens there occurs many fine cracks accompanied by shear bands on the specimen surface. Discontinious growth bands grow into the material from these cracks in the direction perpendicular to the specimen surface.
