Summary　A policy to design systems for searching generic representations for a particular substance or a group of substances・in terms of structural formulas is discussed. Then the policy is applied to polymers in the List of Existing Chemical Substances gazetted by the Japanese Government. It is presented that a name in the List, which is a legal rather than scientific document, should be interpreted in the possibly most wide meaning.　It is tried to cover a name with a set of structural formulas denoted from several views, describing each, also still generic, structural formula on the basis of the principle of the colored complete graph. A prototype system has been developed to demonstrate the propriety of the policy. A searching begins with input of a query consisting of a base structure and the Markush indicator confirming a real meaning to be described. Use of the indicator releases a user from 1eaning of jargon to be used only in the system. The function for drawing a query structure has two modes, a command and a graphic ones. Both are straightforward and very understandable, but the former may be faster under the current circumstance.
