It is not clear how non-native speakers of Japanese understand ambiguous utterances in Japanese conversations which include a word such as yoku, an adverb and used quite ambiguously in terms of its meaning in conversations. This study examines how both native speakers and non-native speakers co-ordinate and interpret the meaning of yoku in the concept of space in Mental Space Theory proposed by Fauconnier(2000). The data used in this study is the KY corpus in which conversations between native speakers and non-native speakers of Japanese are collected. In this paper, I analyzed 3 examples of conversations and examined how a native speaker and a non-native speaker co-ordinate to specify the meaning of yoku in a conversation.
