Trabecular meshorks (TMs) in hepatic sinusoidal endothelial cells of mouse, golden hamster, rat, guinea-pig, and rabbit were studied by scanning and freeze-fracture electron microscopy. TMs of examined all laboratory animals shared identical properties; TMs appeared on the cell surface as porous mounds; TMs were composed of varying numbers of anastomosing trabeculae; TMs were often merged with sieve plates; and, ridges and grooves connecting trabeculae were found on the floor membrane of TMs by freeze-fracture technique. TMs are derived from bunches of plasmalemmal invaginations and are involved in the rushed formation of sieve plate.
