Well-known Chinese actress Chen Chong (Joan Chen) made her international debut in 1987, in Bernardo Bertolucci's film The Last Emperor, which won many Academic Awards that year. From then on, Chen portrayed many kinds of characters with varying cultural backgrounds in Hollywood movies. In 1994, she played in Stanley Kwan's Red Rose, White Rose which is the turn won her a best actress award at the Golden Horse awards, the Chinese-language Oscars. In 1998, Chen returned home to direct her film, Xiu Xiu: The Sentdown Girl, which received many citations at international film festivals and won seven Golden Horse awards, including best film, screenplay as well as director. In this paper, I will discuss some cultural issues from a cross-cultural perspective by analyzing Joan's movies-one of her Chinese movies Little Flower, and five of her English movies in which she experienced varying cultures herself by playing roles of different nationalities with varying cultural backgrounds. I will also examine her Chinese film Red Rose, White Rose, through which Joan met her own culture. Finally, I will introduce the first movie she directed Xiu Xiu: The Sentdown Girl. By directing this movie, Joan Chen completed her journey of going back to her own culture.
