It is widely known that in Japanese literature, especially in poetry, snow in winter, the moon in autumn, and flowers (cherry blossoms) in spring represent natural beauty. These three have, therefore, often been used to refer to natural beauty. Snow has made human life difficult since ancient times. However, traditional poetry was born when snow was concidered something to enjoy seeing just like the moon and flowers. It cannot be denied that this was due to the influence from old Chinese poetry. However, those who could regard the three objects of beauty were limited to people in special situations of special areas. In considering nature as a topic of Japanese poetry, attention should be paid to people who lived different lives from those of the poets of Kokinshu and Gosenshu. It is our duty as scholars of Japanese culture to exclude the idea that the Japanese sense of nature is that of such poets and consider the Japanese sense of beauty in much broader perspective.
