ABSTRACT　For mechanically reducing the amout of ash in fine coals, a new dense-media separator was made as an experiment and its separation efficiency was experimentally investigated. Coals used were eight kinds, such as Ashibetu coal and Taiheiyo coal. Dense-media in separator were used zinc sulfate and zinc chloride solutions, carbon tetrachloride. The application of limestone slurry to the dense-media was also studied. As a result, the new separator was found to have enough performance as practical separator for even fine coal which it was difficult to separate with dense-media. The separation efficiencies when limestone slurry was used as dense-media were compared favorably with those using real dense-media such as zinc sulfate, within the range of 1.3 to 1.4 in specific gravity of dense-media.
