Aluminum alloys of A5052, A5083 and A6061 have been welded with a filler metal composed of nickel wire and aluminum foil using a CW CO2 laser. The effects of the filler metal and shielding gas on the joint efficiency of the welded joints have been investigated by varying the nickel content in the filler metal and shielding gas. As for the case where A5052 alloy is welded using shielding gas of argon, its joint efficiency increases with the increase of nickel content in the filler metal, in contrast, the joint efficiencies for A5083 and A6061 alloys are not influenced by the nickel content in the filler metal. As for the cases where A5052, A5083 and A6061 are welded using shielding gas of nitrogen, their joint efficiencies, the average values of which are lower by 15 percent than that of the joints welded using shielding gas of argon, increase with the increase of nickel content in the filler metal. The aforementioned experimental results are discussed in connection with the microstructure and hardness investigated at the welded joints.
