In 1869, Christopher Carrothers and his wife, Julia arrived in Japan as Presbyterian missionaries. After 8 years' service in Japan, Julia went back to America and published a book about Japan named The Sunrise Kingdom in 1879. The book was dedicated to the members of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church. It follows the development of Julia's missionary work with a special emphasis on Japanese women, children and family. This paper surveys the contents of The Sunrise Kingdom and shows the changes in Julia's attitudes toward Japan. It also points out that Julia's description has a tendency to idealize America in comparison with uncivilized Japan.
