Titanium is a difficult metal to polish, and thus mechanical polishing using conventional rotating tools takes a lot of time. It was shown by former research that a centrifugal shooting type polishing system is available to polish titanium. However, there is a possibility of reducing or deforming the thin parts such as crown margin because of its polishing mechanism, that is, shooting abrasive materials towards the polishing surface. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of polishing by a centrifugal shooting type polishing system on the margin of titanium cast crown. Three kinds of metals pure titanium, Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy and Au-Pd-Ag alloy were used as the experimental materials. Plate-like specimens in imitation of cast crown margin were fabricated by casting, and polished using a centrifugal shooting type polishing system using various polishing times. After polishing, the margin reduction was measured and the margin deformation was observed microscopically. The results were as follows: 1. In cases of polishing pure titanium and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy, the margin reduction increased as the polishing time became longer; however, the maximum reduction was small witn 14μm. 2. In cases of polishing pure titanium and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy, the difference in margin angle had little influence on the margin reduction. 3. No statistically significant difference in the margin reduction was noted between pure titanium and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy. 4. The margin had a tendency to be slightly rounded off by polishing. From the above, it is suggested that polishing by a centrifugal shooting type polishing system has little influence on the margin of titanium cast crowns.
