Abstract A simple U-shaped magnetic probe named the stress tester was developed to measure nondestructively macro-residual stresses in ferromagnetic materials by using the magnetostriction effect. The permeability is a function of strains, so that the stress distribution of materia1 can be obtained from the permeability which is detected by means of an alternating current bridge. The shear difference method was introduced to determine principal stresses in uni- and bi-axial residual stress fields. This method was applied to measure the residual stresses of the welded testpieces. It was shown that there was good agreement between the results obtained from two kinds of methods, i.e. the strain gage method accompanying stress reliaf and this non-destructive one.
