In cold areas, snow is a serious problem for daily life and effective measures are required to counteract it. During winter months, the sea water temperature is higher than the air temperature and thus provides a promising, cheap form of local energy. As yet however, no system exists that can melt snow by using a sea water source heat pump. This paper describes how such a system has been researched, developed and used and presents actual experimental findings. The system was used in Aomori City between the 01st February 1995 to the 31st March 1995. As expected it was found that the Snow Melting System was effected by weather conditions, however even in adverse conditions, a heat pump COP of approximately 5.2 was attained. It can be concluded that this Sea Water Heat Pump System is a promising method for melting snow in cold climates.
