A therapist has to examine and observe the correspondence between client's and his or her own emotions and images. This will facilitate the constellation of an intermediate realm, or psychic vessel, between the client and himself or herself. The client's wounds, and even the therapist's, will be contained within the vessel, and they will be spontaneously and simultaneously healed. Instead of presenting the recovery process of individual clients in detail, I illustrate the wounding and healing of two pairs of deities in the Japanese mythology. Susanowo is damned and banished to the underworld by other deities because he has violated Amaterasu's temenos and social norms. Amaterasu damns herself; she retreats into the heavenly rock cave, and the whole world becomes completely dark and evil deeds occur. From then on, Susanowo and Amaterasu begin to live through their own inner individual needs respectively and perhaps simultaneously. Susanowo slays a huge serpent and becomes a culture hero. Now Susanowo has lived through his inner needs, developing mature masculinity. Amaterasu accepts her inner needs and lives through the dying process in the dark rock cave. Amenotadikarawo hides behind the door of the heavenly rock cave. Amenouzume, who is half-naked and shaman-possessed, dances, and deities surrounding her laugh aloud, looking at her dance. Amaterasu is curious about the deities' laughter and slightly opens the door of the rock cave. She asks Amenouzume why the deities are so pleased and enjoying themselves. Amenouzume tells Amaterasu that the deities are pleased and enjoying themselves because there is a deity (initiated by Amaterasu) who is superior to her. Amenouzume, who symbolizes maturity and spirituality, may play a role as the intermediary and mediator between Susanowo and Amaterasu, and bridges both of them. When Amaterasu slightly opens the door of the rock cave, the male deities Amenokoyane and Futodama allow her to look into a mirror. Amaterasu looks at herself in the mirror, but she cannot recognize her reflection because she has been initiated and transformed. Amaterasu becomes further curious, and she slowly appears from the door of cave. Amenotadikarawo helps Amaterasu come out from the rock cave, taking her hand. Amaterasu comes out from the rock cave completely, and the whole universe becomes healed. Not only Amenouzume but also the above three male deities appear in the intermediate realm, or within the intermediate vessel between Susanowo and Amaterasu. If the therapist lives through his or her inner needs in the relationship with his or her client, and discusses the psychic correspondence between therapist and client, the client's living through his or her own inner needs will be constellated. At that moment the intermediates will be also constellated in the intermediate realm, or within the intermediate vessel. The intermediates will mediate between therapist and client, and a spontaneous healing process will be constellated in the client's, and even in therapist's, psyche. In sandplay therapy, the sandtray may function as the intermediate vessel.
