In Japan, for the most part ,learning English takes plase in the formal setting of the classroom. Opportunities for communicative exchang with native speakers of the language are limited. Yet, despite this context-based English that would be more appropriate and relavant to the Japanese setting. This essay makes an argument for emphasizing context over communication as a necessary step towards achieving greater relevancy for English in student's lives.
