Many visual functions change from the fovea out to the periphery of the retina. Previous studies have revealed that there are various factors related to these changes, e.g., density of cones, size of receptive field, density of retinal ganglion cells. However, the degree of such changes varies, depending on visual functions. It is difficult to explain what factors are responsible for such variation across these functions. In this paper, I review recent developments of photopic peripheral vision in terms of anatomical, physiological, and psychophysical aspects.
