The authentic history tells Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), sometimes called Kanko, i.e., his honorific term, was exiled by his political enemy to Dazaifu (Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture) for his last few years and was finally earthened there. Eventually, the deified Michizane was enshrined there as Dazaifu Tenmangu. In Kagoshima Prefecture, however, there prevails a legend that Michizane fled from Dazaifu to Satsuma Province (the west part of Kagoshima Prefecture) and took refuge at Fujikawa, Togo Town, Satsuma County, to the end of his life. Fujikawa tenmangu, now registered as Sugawara jinja, is located at Kitano, Fujikawa, and enshrines the soul of Michizane. Two hundreds or more years ago, a huge pine tree by the pathway in the precinct fell down in a violent storm. Then, in its place an old stone stupa appeared. It was believed to be the Kanko's tomb. And the tree was a walking stick that had been stabbed into the ground by Michizane and had taken root and grown larger. Garyubai plum orchard in the precinct is well-known in this region and is said to have been planted by Michizane. The tomb of Shirotayu, the chief attendant, also stands in the corner of the precinct. Many similar folk tales about Michizane's temporary sojourn are found scattered around Satsuma Province. When we examine the distributions and characteristics of Michizane's legends, we can presume dynamics of the legend formation as follows; (1) imitation (2) settling of drifting elements of story (3) integration of elements into a story (4) enlargement and absorbing of foreign elements into an enhansed story and so on.
