This paper details a one year course in English for freshmen non-English majors at Sapporo University. A class consisted of over fifty students, and met once a week for a ninety minute lesson, from April 1983 till the last lesson in January 1984. The study was centered around short humorous stories, which were assigned for thorough learning, and various activities developed from the stories. The paper first discusses the plans for and conditions under which the course was conducted and then details the procedures followed in the lessons. The grading and the language used in class is also discussed. To place the course in an English language teaching context, a rationale for the design and procedures is detailed. The conclusions and recommendations suggest that the format is advantageous with a class of this kind and that more supplementary activities be developed to increase the variety and utility of the course.
