In the previous studies on the long-term intercorporate transactions in Japanese automobile industry, it has been said that strategies of car assemblers decide whether or not the parts contracts with suppliers will be lasted. But, for the most part, continuation of parts contracts depends on the strategy of not only car assemblers but also suppliers. Since 1985, there have been some changes for the way of intercorporate transactions in Japanese automobile industry. In order to grasp the mechanism and changes for the way of intercorporate transactions in Japan, we presented 2 hypotheses as follows. Hypothesis 1 is that parts contracts with suppliers that provide more than two car assemblers with parts tend to last compared to suppliers that provide only one car assembler with parts. Hypothesis 2 is that parts contracts with suppliers that diversify their parts products in constrained area of parts tend to last compared to suppliers that diversify their parts products in various areas of parts. We collected data from the biannual reports on Toyota and Nissan published by IRC and interviewed some engineers working at the parts companies. We used Cox regression for analysis of data. Dependent variable is the period of time that each parts contract lasted. From the result of data analysis, the hypothesis 1 and 2 were statistically supported. Implication of our study is as follows. First, the continuation of parts contracts is decided by the strategy of not only car assemblers but also suppliers. Second in order to strengthen the relations with the car assemblers, suppliers should diversify their products lines in constrained area for the specialization of technology and acquisition of knowledge by learning by doing. Third, it has been said that long-term parts transactions in Japan were based on Keiretsu transactions and trust among companies. But strategy of each supplier is also important factor that has great influence on the continuation of parts contracts in Japan.
