• We pay tribute to Gen Shirane's legacy by summarizing the results of x-ray magnetic scattering studies of a series of interesting materials, including chromium, NiO, MnF_2, rare earth boro-carbides, cuprates, and NdNiO_3 thin films. We focus on what may be learned through the use of polarization-dependent x-ray techniques, both elastic and inelastic, and compare that with the results of neutron scattering.
