On the distribution densities of capacity fade and inter-fade time intervals over SISO Rayleigh mobile fading channels

The distribution densities of capacity fade and inter-fade duration for single-input single-out (SISO) Rayleigh fading channels are studied. Exact closed form expressions of conditional probability density functions are derived for the level crossing intervals of instantaneous fading capacity. The so-called Rice probability functions, which are obtained by applying the classical level crossing theory, are useful to approximate the distribution densities of the capacity fade and inter-fade duration over short time intervals. Additionally, the derived functions can be used to calculate an approximate solution for the densities based on the independence assumption between the level crossing intervals. Numerical examples, considering the case of Rayleigh mobile-to-mobile fading channels, are presented together with simulation results to illustrate the analysis and examine the validity of the derived theoretical expressions.
