I wrote three essays named The Pleasure of Expression from 1977 to 1999. This following essay is a sequel to those previous ones. Students have lost confidence in writing compositions because they no longer understand what it means to complete such a task. I would like to make clear what it means to write a composition. I think that there are two basic goals for one to achieve in writing compositions. One is to be able to present your own ideas and feelings clearly for yourself. The other is to be able to convey your thoughts so others will deeply understand your message. Being able to express difficult and complex feelings in terms that other people can understand is what makes writing a composition both difficult and enjoyable as well as making it a powerful exercise in which to engage. It is this true meaning and pleasure gained through writing compositions that I wish to share with others.
